Looking Back - July 2021

We started July out with a bang.
Liam graduated preschool!

We went to an adoption celebration.
I remember this couple sitting with us at our table over dinner with another family as they asked questions about fostering and adoption and their deep desire to begin their family this way. Following that dinner we got to witness that story unfold for their family and then celebrate their finalized adoption.
It was beautiful!

Seven Marks held their first ever summer camp for K-5 graders! The students were huge helpers and volunteers that helped Kayla put on the event. It was a HUGE success!  Then we brought our camp over to the apartment complex we frequently serve to let their kids be included too.

We did manage to stick in some time to rest and relax as well.

Alethia Grace Turns NINE!

The past couple of days have been super special for us.

Little did we know that it was the day before our future daughter's 2nd birthday!

Today just so happens to be Orphan Sunday,
which is wrapped around Adoption Awareness month (November).

This month also holds so many memories from 2011.
We were praying for a miracle to get our entire family on a plane on November 20th
(the last possible day for me to travel with my high-risk pregnancy),
Which we now know didn't happen.
The VISA denial was sent to Nairobi and, because we didn't know any better,
were beginning to think that we were going to lose this precious girl that had just joined our family.

But here she is...with her family...here in America.
Turning NINE years old!

She is full of life and emotion.
She is a fiercely loyal friend.
She LOVES to read.
Purple is her long-standing favorite color.
She has her own unique sense of style;).
Her favorite thing to do, by far, is play family
with her stuffed animals, Barbie's or siblings.
She is quick to obey,
loves to be a helper and
is sensitive to those around her.

Alethia Grace,
You have taught me so much about love. You have taught me so much about digging deeper.  You are beautiful inside and out and my prayer is that you will learn to be more and more confident in who God has made you to be as you begin your own personal journey with Him.  I am beyond blessed to call you MINE!  I love you.  Happy Birthday!
Love,
Mom

Friday Photos : Story In Pictures : #BroughtChloeHome

I don't even know when to begin the countdown.
When they dove into the adoption process over 6 years ago to #BringChloeHome.
Or when they chose to move to Uganda over 4 years ago to #BringHomeToChloe.

Regardless of the exact amount of time...
we had ALL been anticipating this moment for a VERY . LONG . TIME .

(Pardon my lack of photography expertise and captured moments.
I was choking down happy tears and making my own rounds to
grab and hug all of my family in the process;)

The kids were SO excited as they awaited their cousins/friends.

We waited...and waited...and waited...
Apparently it takes a while to herd a bunch of (FIVE) tired girls, a pregnant mama and an
under caffeinated dad through an airport, ahem...

It was so sweet to see who arrived to show love and support.

Our "Squad" has been through a lot over the years.
And this moment just added another milestone to the list.

The Boys:
Josh, Jonathan, Craig and Matt

Cana and her brand new baby cousin Hadley

The Siblings (minus Jacob who was still in Haiti):
Jared, Joy, Jonathan and Josh

I couldn't get enough of Kaliyah and her balloons.

All the older girl cousins.

Heidi and Kelly

Chloe and Alethia
From "best friends" in the babies home from just a few months of age, to cousins.
The emotions of this moment were nearly too much for Alethia to handle.
So much to process and sift through.
But it wasn't long before they were creating their own foundation beyond the
distant memories that have all but disappeared.

Karis and Izzie

The ONE group shot that our friendly volunteer photographer took.
I was sure there would be at least 8 to choose from by the amount of time that it took
to get this ONE, ha!

This moment I will not soon forget.

Welcome home Jonathan, Kelly, Cana, Kayil, Chloe, Karis, Kaliyah and baby Via.
It's time to begin a new chapter!

To God be all the Glory.

Words

I haven't posted a blog post with actual word content in a very long time.

Finding the time and the quiet that necessitates such a post is few and far between these days, but I wouldn't trade this season for anything!

In fact, NOT being attached to a screen is kind of something I've been working on over the past couple of months...some days are better than others, but it is a personal conviction I've needed to get control over.  So there's that.

But as I was sitting outside on this beautiful breezy day, in the shade of my carport after a nice little workout, sifting through 7th grade curriculum (how is that even possible?!) and just looking around me I began welling up with gratitude for all that God has given us.

Given ME!

I look at my Areyna Joy and the tangible joy that she is to be around.  I see her growing beauty into young womanhood. I see her peacemaking spirit in action almost on a daily basis.  I see her confidence in who she is in Christ.  Can I just stop and say how special it is to see her activity on the Bible App that we share and how she is getting in the word all on her own now!

I see Zeke and how far he has come over the past few years.  I remember the feelings of that difficult season with him so clearly but can hardly remember him being in such a difficult spot.  I see his sensitivity and compassion.  I see his creativity and leadership qualities growing.  And the difficulties that come with an artistic kid like Zeke, who thinks outside the box, quickly becomes overshadowed by the positive qualities that accompany those exact same qualities.

My "mama bear" came out on behalf of my Alethia Grace this weekend!  If you are not an adoptive mama you may not understand the magnitude of this, but the bonding process is most definitely a process.  You might move forward a step but moments later fall back 10...but I feel like this past weekend was a stride in this mama's heart in my relationship with her.  I have also seen her grow in so many emotional areas throughout this past year that I thought may never improve.

Cai brings the laughter that this Colony so desperately needs!  His giggle, his jokes, his daily random facts, his artistic ability to create something from nothing...he is loud and overly inappropriate with bathroom humor to be sure, but man I love this kid (and the fact that he STILL lets me nibble those chubby cheeks!).

Jude, oh Jude...so extra, so sassy, so confident, so persistent. JUST. SO. MUCH.  This kid is smart as a whip though.  And when he is sweet, MAN he's sweet.  He is an all or nothing kid.  Determined to the core (unless he is tired...or hungry, ha).  If he can't figure something out he'll keep trying until he does.  Again, so many good qualities can and will come with his fire cracker personality.

What a blessing to be able to stay home and just be mom.  I don't take it for granted...well, actually I do sometimes, but I am so very grateful for this opportunity.  We may not have much wiggle room in the bank account because of this choice, but God NEVER ceases to amaze us with his provision, and over abundance that he lavishes on our family.  From clothing, to food, to toys for the kids, activities for our family to do, childcare for dates, a beautiful safe home to open up to anyone and everyone.  I don't even have to apologize for the bathroom issues anymore!

My husband loves and follows hard after Jesus and is so in tune with the Holy Spirit that he makes submission easy.  Not perfect by any means, but he is humble and teachable and growing into such a sexy leader;)  He loves me and the kids well.  We are learning to fight fair and not hold things in.  We have committed to learn from our own mistakes and poor choices, as well as other people's.  And we wholeheartedly believe that we are not exempt from any temptation, meaning we are continually reevaluating and praying that we will be aware of the enemies tactics.  We are learning to say "no" and all the freedom that comes along with healthy boundaries for our family and ministry.

Our life is not perfect.  Kids disobey.  Appliances break. Bank accounts are depleted. We hurt each others feelings.  Relationships waver.  People disappoint.  Difficult seasons with friends, and each other, come in tidal waves...

But God...

He is so good, and so patient.  He is always waiting for our repentance so that he can wrap us in grace and help us move forward.  He loves to give good gifts to his children.  And then smiles when we generously give them away.

Life is full of hurt and sin and pain.  But God also allows these glimpses of good to hang on to.  We all get them, we just have to be willing to see them.  Contentment. And today I see it and I praise His Name, Jesus, the only one worthy of that name, for it ALL.

#MayviaInUG ~ Part 2

The night had arrived for Mayvia to make their appearance to the girl named Kelly.

The husband (who calls himself Smooth) had his documentation apparatus (we call this an iPhone camera) in hand while the girl we call Kelly looked on in curiosity to see just who this Mayvia really was.

As soon as the girls called Heidi and Tasha (or Mayvia...geesh, this blog is getting kind of difficult to write, ha!) took the first step out of the carriage pick up (yup, it's still the airport) they barely made eye contact with the girl called Kelly before the tears began spilling down each of their faces.  But then, without any warning, the girl called Kelly quickly covered her face, walked right past them,  refusing to make eye contact, and waved the girls called Heidi and Tasha to follow her away from the entrance where everyone was looking at these crazy women who are NOT locals (they like to call us Muzungus".  Don't worry, it's not offensive.)

After gathering their composure, and luggage, they made their way to a nearby Inn (which actually is called Two Friends.  It was BEAUTIFUL!) to rest for the night.

The entourage of giddy, emotional girlfriends we call Kelly, Heidi and Tasha (along with the husband that calls himself Smooth) hopped in the carriage (we will now call a carriage a car) and made the long trek to the distant place that the girl called Kelly, moved to (in Africa).

One very awesome surprise that the Heavenly Father orchestrated is that Mayvia's arrival just so happened to fall just days before the long-awaited court date of sweet Chloe Laiti.  This is the very reason the girl called Kelly decided that moving to a distant land (called Africa) was going to be oh-so-difficult, but exactly what the Lord had planned for her life.  Her story.

Mayvia (do you mind if we just refer to the girls we call Heidi and Tasha as the joint Mayvia?  It's so much quicker to type.  Okay, thanks!) had no time for Jet lag as they jumped into Nanny/Auntie role to get this court hearing underway with as little stress as possible.  For they were put in charge of the girl called Kelly's ( and the husband who calls himself Smooth) small tribe of girls.  Five to be exact.

Mayvia had some personal past experience with Court in such a distant land as this, so were prepared for the long day ahead.  First things first, we had to get all fancy for the judge.  He likes to see families who are put together.
Cana, Tasha, and Kayil waiting to head to Kampala

Then we all packed into the Attorney's office to prep for the day.

The husband who calls himself Smooth explaining what court will look like to the girls.

Heidi beginning project "keep Kaliyah happy"

We finally made it to the outer room of the courthouse where we set up shop for the day.  This is where many hairdo's were done, and more-than-I-can-count card games were played.

This girl called Kaliyah, will NEVER be bored with all the mamas around her to keep her happy!
After what seemed like HOURS...wait, it actually WAS hours.  TEN hours to be exact, of waiting, waiting, and waiting, the family was called back to the Judge's quarters.

Mayvia began immediately praying for favor and that the Judge would be compassionate for their long wait and actually hear them.

Not 15 minutes later the family began filing out of the Judge's quarters with very solemn looks on their faces.  They had been told that it was too late and that they would try again tomorrow.

Now, 10 hours sounds like a long day for you, I'm sure.  But have you ever just sat, waiting in anticipation of a  potentially stressful situation for ten hours?  With 5 small girls?

The girl called Kelly and the husband who calls himself Smooth held it together, gathered the large crew and headed to find some sustenance and any kind of Inn that would be open upon such late notice.

We all went to bed that night with very sad, tired hearts (and slept in our contacts and the clothes we'd been wearing all day since this was certainly not planned or expected.  But getting ready time was cut in 1/2.  Actually, climbing out of bed and rubbing the fog off my contacts pretty much did the trick.)

But praise the Lord for new beginnings.  And new days.  And sunshine.
Day 2 of court.  Looking a little less put together and a LOT more exhausted and warn out.

And STROLLERS that push a fussy baby around so you don't have to carry her for hours at a time (I'm pretty sure my biceps grew an inch on each arm after that 48 hours!).

Then, around 1:30pm this family was called back to the Judge's quarters again.  Over two hours later they came out with great rejoicing from a very positive hearing with a very compassionate judge.

We decided to celebrate before heading back home and made an adventure to a nearby mall to eat dinner and visit the brown-skinned Santa in his hut.  Because this is what Christmas looks like in a distant land (called Africa).

What an adventure Mayvia had already had.

But wait, it had just begun!
