Prevention

There are a few signs that we consistently see Zeke develop when he is beginning to get sick.  Way before the signs of a cough or vomiting we begin to see...

1- Whining - you know, the kind that continues to crescendo throughout the day until you want to pull your hair out.

2- Lack Of Appetite - he normally eats enough for all of us in the house so when he turns down his favorites like broccoli, cookies or peanut butter then we know we have a problem

3- The Return Of The Runny Nose - before we came across the wonderful invention of the humidifier Zeke was plagued with one of the worst runny noses I've ever seen.  So, when he starts wiping his nose again, we know a big sickness is coming on.

4 - Did I mention he just won't eat?!

Anyway, he has all the simptoms of pre-sickness.  Is there anything we can do to help prevent him from getting sick?  He is 2 1/2, gets a daily multi-vitamin, and plenty of exercise and veggies.  We hate to just sit around and wait for the bug to hit.  Any suggestions?

I know I've seen gummy vitamins..what about a vitamin specifically with a higher dose of Vitamin C..but still safe enough for children?

My honey's grandmother told me to take 1000 mg of Vitamin C every hour for 3 hours when I was sick. It really helps to boost the immune system. However- I'm not sure what the appropriate dosage would be for children.

Good luck!

Oh. My. Gosh! That boy has got a lot of mucous!!! Poor thing! Is he feeling any better?

Just remember BRAT when your little ones are sick- bananas, rice, applesauce, toast.

And plenty of fluids!

I always give jericho plenty of vitamin c and make a pot of homemade chicken noodle. Sounds cliché but it's proven to boost the immune system! Once Jericho ate around 20 of Ryan's 500 mg vitamin c and when I called poison control they said he might get an upset stomache but that your body will natural eliminate what it doesn't need and it isn't harmful for toddlers to have large doses. Obviously not THAT large, but I noticed that his cold symptoms went away without becoming a full fledge cold if I gave him one of the vitamin c a day. I'm also really into homeopathics so there are some simple drops you can put in their water if your interested in that. Also now that I think about it hylands has some great natural immune boosters for tots. Good luck!

Oh, poor kid! It seems like this at this age, they are so susceptible to germs. Jubal really enjoys eating plain yogurt and it is super for the immune system. I add fruit to it too for the extra C. Also, I cook with a lot of fresh garlic in the winter time to help boost our immunities. Maybe that will help. Washing hands too helps a ton. I know that's so hard to do and inconvenient sometimes but it works. I usually have Jubal wash hands ever time we come home. Hang in there, mama.

Tasha have you ever heard of zicam? It won't help you now if Zeke is already fully sick. If you use it at the first signs of a cold it really works (for me). I know there are two products that are safe to use for children they are the nasal swabs and the nasal gel spray. Maybe you could give your doctor a call to make sure. But this stuff really did work for me, I used it at the first sign of symptoms and I never got the cold. There's a website too, www.zicam.com

We love Dr. Sears and he recommends using nasal saline drops so that the germs don't have a place to live.

from an article by him: "A "nose hose" and a "steam clean." These are two of Dr. Bill's favorite home remedies. The nose is the door for entry of germs into the body. So, at the first sign of a cold spritz saline nasal spray into your baby's nose and suck out the secretions with a nasal aspirator. Take your baby into a bathroom or shower and let the steam liquefy the secretions to make them easier to cough and sneeze out."

AAhhhhh!!! I know he was miserable, but that was the funniest thing I've seen in a long time... and really incredible, actually, that he could have THAT much fluid! WoW!

Jim will love to see this shot... I really do hope he's feeling better, though! Poor guy!

So I found your blog through Rita - went to college with her and Kyle. Anyway, I don't know if you're interested but I have been taking a product called Reliv and it has done wonders for me already. They have children's products as well - completely safe...NO warning labels. My friend's daughter took it during all three of her pregnancies and her children still take it and the doctors were amazed at how healthy she and the children were during pregnancy as well as how healthy the kids are now. Let me know if you're interested and I can give you more information!

Hi, I found your blog through Joy. That is a hilarious picture, but he looks like he feels so bad!! Poor baby boy!

Chicken noodle soup has been proven to help with colds. It's not just an old wives tale... it fights inflammation!

I also give my kids lots of citrus when they have colds... mandarin oranges are my son's favorite treat when he's sick.

And the saline nasal spray helps a lot too.
